The teachers at MCS are truly special and the PTF is hosting a teacher appreciation luncheon for all teachers on Wed, May 16, on behalf of all parents.

In conjunction with Teacher Appreciation Day we are collecting comments and affirmations about are teachers. We also want  to  know how loved and valued you think teachers  are and what an important role they play in students  lives.

What has a teacher done that you thought was unique? Who is your favorite teacher and why? Do you have a favorite story about one of MCS’ teachers? We want to hear about them!!

Some interesting facts about MCS teachers:

There are 45 teachers and specialists at MCS

There is a  large percentage of long-time teachers at MCS because of their passion for education and ministry to children

Two teachers have been with the school since its founding in 1987; Mrs. Kathy Hilts (4th grade) and Mrs. Susan Nielson (Kindergarten)

The second annual Pastors’ Breakfast was held Friday, May 4 and nearly 30 pastors attended from local churches.

The intent of the day was to honor pastors and build strong bridges to the Christian community. The event also allowed pastors the opportunity to share with students on how God directed their life to become a pastor.

The day began with breakfast and introductions then transitioned to an all-school assembly with student performances.

Middle school students shared to the assembled crowd their faith, read scripture and welcomed pastors. One of the highlights of the day was a dance performance by seventh grader Kerri Pelekoudas.

“It’s nice to be able to bring pastors on campus so they know what some of their kids are involved in at the school,” Director of Admissions, Sherry Fenley said. “They can see the quality of our programs. It really is an enjoyable day for them. This is a time for our students to honor our pastors. It also gives both pastors and students an opportunity to interact.”

On Thursday May 3, MCS took part in The National Day of Prayer, an annual observance celebrated by hundreds of thousands of people at more than 40,000 events nationwide.

MCS students grades kindergarten through eighth, plus teachers, administrators, parents, and friends took part in the occasion at the school. Organized by parent Frances Trane and fifth grade teacher Susan Walsvig, the event was an opportunity to focus on the importance of prayer and worship, as well as give students and opportunity to come together in prayer for our school, community,  State of California, and nation.

A representative from each grade level led in prayer for a specific focus area.  One highlight of the event was a worship video focusing on prayer created by sixth grade student Jesse Zerr.

The  National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

The day exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible.

Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. Last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of severalU.S.territories signed similar proclamations.

Children from Kidworks kick soccer ball at MCS camp.

More than 60 children got a rare opportunity to take part in an all-day soccer camp hosted by former and current professional soccer players, Sunday, April 29 at MCS.

The children, who are part of the Santa Ana-based KidWorks Center, live in central Santa Ana and many of them attend Monte Vista or Lincoln elementary schools.

Kidworks was founded in 1993 to help the members of the Latino community there who are battling poverty and crime. Its mission is to restore at-risk neighborhoods. Transportation to the Mariners campus was provided by Santa Ana-based Mater Dei High School, training of the children was provided by Pure Game.

The clinic was created and organized by the Ianni family, which includes Tayt, wife Nicole and children Brooke, Alex and Luke, who attend MCS. Tayt played soccer at UCLA for four years and the team won a National Championship his freshman year. He also played professional soccer for several years, including the inaugural season of Major League Soccer.

Tayt Ianni was able to enlist the help of Chris Klein. Klein played 12 seasons in Major League Soccer with Kansas City, Real Salt Lake, and ending with LA Galaxy. He won a MLS championship in 2000 and has 23 appearances for the U.S. and five goals. Retiring in 2010, he is currently with the LA Galaxy as Director of their Youth Academy Program.

The day included hours of soccer fun, fellowship, and encouragement, not to mention balls, T-shirts, photos, and L.A. Galaxy gear for all participants.

Ava Steaffens, President and CEO of KidsWorks was appreciative of the day for the kids.

“We are blessed to have such amazing support from the Ianni family, Mariners Christian School, Mater Dei who supplied the bus and all the volunteers and staff who came together to make this an extraordinary day for our kids,” Steaffens said. “Congratulations for a job in beijing well done!”
