Mariners Christian School students joined with alumni and family last month to install a new electronic scoreboard on the school field.
The project was the brainchild of MCS alumni Davis Verheyen, who just graduated last June from the school. A member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 90, Davis worked with Mariners Chief Financial Officer Todd Perkins to create the scoreboard as part of his Eagle Scout project.
Davis spent nearly 100 hours planning the project and getting approvals from the Boy Scout Troop. After getting two different permits from the city of Costa Mesa, he was able to finally break ground on this dream project.
To complete the task, Davis enlisted the help of his troop, many of whom are MCS current and past students, family, neighbors, and friends, who pitched in with shovels and pick axes.
By the time they were finished, the team had logged more than 100 volunteer hours over three days at MCS. Soon after, the city gave Davis’ project the final signatures. He then handed the controls for the scoreboard over to the school’s athletic director Mac Thompson.

There are four components to an Eagle project: planning, preparing, fundraising, and production, and Davis needed to show leadership in each area.
“Davis and his family would like to issue a heartfelt thank you to MCS for helping shape a young man who gives back to his community,” said his mother, Tera Verheyen. “Thanks also to every person who donated funds for or worked on his project.”
Yay to Davis! We love the new scoreboard and we love you!
u go davis!
